The Technical Vocational Education and Training or in short, TVET is a programme for Secondary School students which is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the world of work.
TVET Phase 1 was launched in all Secondary Schools in 2011 for S4 and S5 students who were finding it difficult to follow the normal curriculum and sit international examinations. On this programme, students spend three days in their respective school and two days in the workplace when they are in S4 and two days in school and three days in the workplace when they reach S5. The programme is designed to adapt to the learning ability and career interest of the students. During their time in schools they follow English, French, Mathematics, Religion, PSE, Technology and Enterprise, Careers Guidance and Counselling and Physical Education. Their work experience is organized in collaboration with the private sector.
At the end of each year, all students who are on the programme sit for an end of year exam and they are rewarded with a certificate upon successful completion. Friday 30th October 2015, was no exception for those who completed the TVET programme in December 2014. A total of 97 students from nine Secondary schools received their certificates.
The certificate presentation ceremony took place in the SITE (Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education) auditorium in the presence of the Principal Secretary for Tertiary Education, Policy Planning and Administration, Dr. Linda Barrallon, the Secretary for Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Merida Delcy, other Ministry Officials, Head teachers, parents and the students themselves.
In her speech, The Director General for Curriculum, Assessment and Teacher Support (CCATS) Dr Odile Decomarmond pointed out that the ceremony shows the importance of TVET, gives people the opportunity to appreciate the first phase of the programme which has lasted four years and reflects on the second phase which will start in the near future.
She added that while the TVET Phase-One was successful, a lot more needs to be done, in terms of improving relationship with businesses and improving students’ behavior.
Nisa Labiche, who joined TVET in January 2013 and who is now studying to be a cook at the Seychelles Hotel and Tourism Academy (SHTA) expressed her gratitude to the Ministry of Education, for giving all students the opportunity to join such programme.
After the ceremony, the students joined together for a souvenir photo.
