THE SEYCHELLES INSTITUTE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

 

The Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (S.I.T.E) became operational in January 2014 under the auspice of the Ministry of Education. S.I.T.E is located at Mont Fleuri, adjacent to the Ministry of Education.

VISION

The vision of the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education is to be a dynamic, knowledgeable and values-based institution of excellence in teacher education, educational leadership, continuing professional development and research.

 

MISSION

The mission of the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education is to inspire, educate and prepare quality teachers, education leaders and related professionals who are dedicated to improving education quality and students' achievements, and who are responsive to the changing demands of the 21st century. Through excellence in teacher education, educational leadership, research and continuing professional development, S.I.T.E is committed to advancing exemplary practices and 21st century competencies, and promoting the culture of lifelong learning.

 

PHILOSOPHY

We are a dynamic, knowledgeable and values-based institution which takes pride in learning and achievement and fosters excellence, participation, teamwork, reflective practices and high standard of professionalism and academic integrity. We believe in the equality of opportunity, inclusion of diversity and that all our learners deserve a supportive, creative and engaging learning environment for their holistic development. We perceive initial and in-service teacher education as a continuum. We are cognisant that learning is a lifelong process and that research and continuing professional development inform practice and eventually improve students' achievement. HISTORY

The Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (S.I.T.E) became operational in January 2014 following a governmental decision to re-instate teacher education under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. From January 2010 to December 2013, teacher education was offered by the School of Education (SOE) in the University of Seychelles. SOE was preceded by the National Institute of Education from 1999 to 2009 under the auspice of the Ministry of Education.

Teacher Education in Seychelles began in 1959 at the Teacher Training College.  Below is a brief timeline of Teacher Education in Seychelles.

PROGRAMMES 

Programmes on offer

 

Diploma in Education – Early Childhood

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Diploma in Education – Early Childhood which qualifies you to teach at Crèche to Primary Two (P2) in Primary Schools.

 

Diploma in Education – Primary

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Diploma in Education – Primary which qualifies you to teach at Primary Three (P3) to Primary Six (P6) in Primary Schools.

 

Diploma in Education – Secondary specialising in one of the following: The Arts, Technology and Enterprise, English, French, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography, Personal Social and Citizenship Education

 

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Diploma in Education – Secondary in the subject of specialisation (e.g. Diploma in Education – Secondary The Arts) which qualifies you to teach your subject of specialisation (e.g. mathematics) at all levels (Secondary One to Secondary Five) in Secondary Schools.

  • Advanced Diploma in Education
  • Bachelor in Education Primary
  • Bachelor in Education Secondary Geography
  • Bachelor in Education Secondary History
  • Bachelor in Education Secondary Mathematics
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

 

Future Programmes/Courses

 

S.I.T.E endeavours to offer the following:

  • Diploma in Education Secondary specialising in one of the following: Physical Education, ICT, Careers Education
  • Leadership Programmes for: Education Managers, Curriculum Leaders, Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCO)
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses for practising teachers in partnership with Schools, Centre for Curriculum, Assessment and Teacher Support (CCATS) and the Schools Division
  • Degree programmes in partnership with regional and/or international teacher education institutions.
  • Exchange programmes for teacher educators and students in partnership with regional and/or international teacher education institutions

Q.   What are the entry requirements to join the Diploma in Education – Early Childhood Programme?

A.    To join the Programme, you need five IGCSEs or equivalent qualifications as follows:

  • English at Grade C or better
  • Mathematics at Grade C or better,
  • French at B1 (60%) and
  • 2 other subjects at Grade C.

     

Q.   What is the duration of the Diploma in Education – Early Childhood Programme?

A.    The Diploma in Education –Early Childhood Programme is of three years. However, depending on your academic standing, you may have to initially complete an additional year of academic upgrading before enrolling on the three-year programme.

 

Q.   What are the entry requirements to join the Diploma in Education – Primary?

A.    To join the Programme, you need five IGCSEs or equivalent qualifications as follows:

A.    To join the Diploma in Education – Secondary Programme, you need:

  • A' level Grade C or better in the Subject of Specialisation or the relevant Diploma from Post-Secondary Institutions; and
  • IGCSE English at Grade C or equivalent.

     

Q.   What is the duration of the Diploma in Education – Secondary?

A.    The programme is of two years and three months. However, if you wish to join the Diploma in Education – Secondary Technology and Enterprise, you will have to initially complete an additional year of subject upgrading.

 

Q.   How do I progress on a Diploma Programme?

A.    In order to progress on any of the programme you need to successfully complete all courses including the teaching practice components of the programme. You also need to have recorded at least 90% attendance.

 

Q.   What opportunities does S.I.T.E offer to practicing/in-service teachers?

A.    S.I.T.E anticipates offering:

  • Teacher education and training programmes to practicing teachers to upgrade their current qualification;
  • Continuous professional development for educators;
  • Leadership training for school managers.

 

Q.   Will S.I.T.E be offering the D2DE programme previously offered by the National Institute of Education?

A.    S.I.T.E is in the process of reviewing the D2DE programme and intends to re-offer the programme in due course.

 

Q.   Does S.I.T.E have the mandate to deliver Bachelor in Education (B Ed) Programmes?

A.    According to the Tertiary Education Act 2011, S.I.T.E can deliver courses or programmes at Level 7 on the National Qualifications Framework in partnership with local or international University.

 

Q.   Will S.I.T.E be offering the B Ed programme for in-service teachers similar to the ones offered by the School of Education (UniSey) in partnership with Edith Cowan University?

A.    S.I.T.E is in the process of identifying possible articulation programmes for the in-service teachers holding a Diploma Part II or NIE Diploma and at least two years teaching experience. The English requirement will be communicated in due course.
